I got schooled!

Here I'm black. I knew when he played d4 that he wasn't supposed to but I couldn't remember anything about what I should do. Anyway, I clearly went wrong. After the game I looked it up in "Fundamental Chess Openings" and sure enough I had read the passage covering the reply to this several times. This is the kind of occasion when I really want a do over. I don't mind losing that much when I was just outplayed but there was a strong sense that I should have played a better reply here and I really wished I had another chance at it.

Publishing update

A quick update on the diagram situation.  Now what I am using is Aquarium 2012.  I use the "ibook HTML for blog" option after clicking the "Web Export" button in the ribbon on the "Publish" tab.

The one weird thing I ran into was that at first there were some problems with the board.  These problems were mysteriously cured when the number of the replay boards gets over 5 on the whole blog.  I can't explain why that is, but it's been repeatable for me that this solves the problems.

That should explain why I post the two games of mine and the Greco games.  Anyway, Greco's cool!

A game I played

Here's a game I played. I'm white. It has an obvious blunder at the end. I should have taken the rook with check instead of putting my queen on c6. It's an interesting example of coincidence. I just happened to have watched a video explaining the winning of the pawn by Bb5 c6 dxc that morning and this was the first game I played after watching that video.

Second try with Aquarium

Here's another attempt to use the Aquarium 2012 generated HTML. This time I am using the "ibook html for blog". I tried this before and it didn't work but I seem to have figured out why. Aquarium provides two things that you have to copy and paste. The first is something called style sheets. Basically blogger provides a way to add syle sheets to the blog without actually editing the HTML of the page. This didn't end up working for me though. What I did this time was I went ahead and just added the style sheets right before the "end head" tag in the actual HTML of the page. This is the same place I added some code for the java viewer in a previous post.

Anyway, here is the result. The board looks nicer and the square's color shows even with pieces on it. There are some nice replay buttons beneath. One problem is that when you make the first move, a yellow dot appears on the e2 square and won't go away. Another small problem is that rotating the board doesn't rotate the coordinates. Also the tool tip for the "flip board" button is in Russian. Not a huge deal. Some other nice things are that it doesn't require java or flash so it works quite easily even on an ipad. The big advantage of this is of course that I can edit the game or line in Aquarium which is the most natural place for it and then can easily transfer that to the blog with only a few clicks.

ck line

I'm trying the "chess viewer deluxe" pgn viewer this time.  The Aquarium generated replay thingy had a couple of issues.  One was that it seemed to do some wierd stuff to the overall blog particularly if there was more than one post with a diagram.  The other issue was the square colors under pieces were always white.  So I kept looking.  Chess viewer deluxe is one they use at chessgames.com .  I think it looks nice for the most part and I like that the reader can mess with it and move the pieces and things to create variations.

This is mostly just an experiment but I have mentioned the Caro-Kann and the line I play against it in a vague way so I thought I would use this to post the line as far as I really know it.

A link I meant to post a long time ago

This is actually a page I found before I started this blog, and I intended to write up some thoughts on it, but just never have. Anyway, I thought I would post it as is for now.

an interesting page

I'm gonna try and liven it up a bit with some diagrams at least.  This is generated with Aquarium.  The only real drawback here seems to be that the pieces white out the square color which is annoying, but better than nothing.  I know there are various resources for this kind of thing so I may take a look into that for the future.

Here's a position I referenced in my last post.

Basically, it's a pretty non-standard response to the KIA and last time I continued normal KIA development with 6. Bg2 and he played 6...e5.  I wasn't very happy with the result as he just seemed to have strong pressure on me for most of the game.  So, I was looking at different ways to push back, and it seems the main thing I've come up with is to play 6.e5 myself.  I've looked at it this last week and feel this is a decent answer and I will try it if he does the same time the next time I'm white.
